“Nut Free Lunchboxes... The Background”
Childhood food allergies such as peanut allergy have become a major public health problem and the rising incidence is made worse by the very rare but devastating consequences of sudden death in an otherwise healthy child following food-induced anaphylaxis, or allergic reaction to a nut allergen which constricts the trachea and prevents breathing.
The public perception of how likely anaphylaxis is to occur in food-allergic children is largely driven by fear and the media, rather than evidence, however the community’s reaction to these fears is reported to have resulted in long waiting lists for specialist allergists, potentially endangering the small numbers of children truly at high risk who may not be able to see their doctor as required; an epidemic of Epipen prescriptions (adrenaline injections that must accompany an allergic child at all times); the banning of nut-containing foods to whole populations of children, despite their healthful properties; inconsistent childcare, school and community food policy guidelines; and anxious parents and schools.
Victoria was the first Australian State to mandate minimum safety standards for schools and children services to protect children at risk of anaphylaxis. Schools, kindergartens and child care centres are now required to have comprehensive individual management plans for students or children enrolled at their facility who are at risk of anaphylaxis and must also store allergy medication properly as well as have a plan as to how they will alert parents about an allergy incident.
The law requires minimum specialist first aid training for teachers and staff so they know how to treat a child with anaphylactic shock. Schools, kindergartens & child care centres that don’t comply with the legislation could face fines of up to $30,000.
Figures provided on the Victorian State Government website estimate around 4000 Victorian children in childcare, kindergarten or at school have suffered at least one anaphylactic attack & a 2006 survey of all licensed children’s services found about 35 per cent of schools currently had at least one student enrolled who is at risk.
